SPORTS: Piatt leads Port Townsend cross country team at Port Angeles; other prep reports

PORT ANGELES — Bereket Piatt and Ruby Roberts picked up what where they left off when they both won the prestigious Salt Creek Invitational on Saturday.

Port Townsend’s Piatt and Kingston’s Ruby Roberts were easy winners at the three-way Olympic League cross country meet at Port Angeles on Wednesday afternoon.

Piatt won the boys 5-kilometer race at Lincoln Park in 16 minutes, 32.06 seconds while Kingston’s Nick Schippers was way back in second at 16:48.60 and Cameron O’Neill of Port Angeles captured third place in 17:42.17.

Kingston nudged out the Redskins for first-place team honors in a very close race, 34-35, while the Roughriders were in back with a team score of 54.

The Buccaneers claimed fourth and fifth while Port Townsend took sixth and seventh. The teams were tied after four runners at 22-all but Kingston took the crown with its fifth runner coming in 12th, just beating Port Townsend’s 13th place.

The Redskins’ Xavier Frank was sixth (18:17.97) while Mitchell Hubbard was seventh (18:18.73).

Griffin Weir-Hoins was eighth while Addison Harper claimed 13th.

Port Angeles couldn’t keep up with the leaders partly because top runner John Christian missed the meet because of a recurring tendinitis injury.

The Riders also took ninth, 10th, 14th and 18th. Ryan Danisiewicz was ninth while Tavish Taylor took 10th, Cameron Little 14th and Drew Mulder 18th.

It was all Ruby Roberts in the girls 5-kilometer race as she won in 18:58.27.

The Buccaneers went 1-2-3 with teammates Marina Roberts second and Ramona Morshead third.

All five of Kingston’s top runners finished in the top nine as the Bucs easily won the meet with 22 points.

Port Angeles was runner-up with a score of 33 after going 4-5-6 and also taking eighth and 10th places.

Alison Maxwell took fourth place (20:31.68) while Chanda Romney, a transfer from Forks, captured fifth (20:47.66) and Wubi Acheson claimed sixth (21:25.62).

Hannah Wahto was eighth while Jamie Gladfelter took 10th.

Port Townsend was incomplete in the girls race with only four runners. Brittany Grant led the Redskins with an 11th place finish (22:30.13).

SILVERDALE — The Roughriders rebounded from their first loss of the season with an Olympic League victory over the Eagles on Wednesday.

Port Angeles once again swept the singles matches, with Micah Roos, Connor Reid and Hayden McCartney all victorious.

While Roos and McCartney won in straight sets, Reid battled back after losing the first set to beat Klahowya’s Phil Alessi 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Port Angeles’ A.J. Konopaski and Derek Crain won the No. 1 doubles match 6-4, 6-2 against Brandon Neet and Marc Barbosa to clinch the team win.

McCartney was named the player of the match by Port Angeles coach Brian Gundersen.

“Hayden was very impressive today,” Gundersen said. “He was focused from the first point to the last point and played a great match.”

The Riders (4-1) host Port Townsend/Chimacum on Friday.

Volleyball North Mason 3, Port Townsend 1

BELFAIR — The Redskins were handed their first Olympic League loss of the season after falling to the Bulldogs 22-25, 25-9, 26-24, 26-24 on Tuesday.

Port Townsend jumped ahead after winning the first game against the two-time defending league champions, but the Bulldogs responded by taking the last three to win the match.

“I think we were so up and excited about Port Townsend finally beating North Mason in a game, we got a little ahead of ourselves,” Redskins coach Nettie Witheridge said.

“We gave a good fight the rest of the match, but we could have fought harder. There were just a few too many little unforced errors.”

Katy Pollock had 100 percent serving with five aces as well as seven kills to lead the Redskins.

Bella Daubenburger also had 100 percent serving with three aces.

Port Townsend hosts Sequim today at 6:15 p.m.
