SPORTS: Forks volleyball on a roll with third win in row; other prep reports

FORKS — The Forks volleyball team posted its third straight win Thursday after starting the season 0-2.

The Spartans dropped Southwest Washington League foe Winlock in three games in front of the home crowd, 25-12, 25-12, 25-16

“It was probably one of our best games of the season tonight,” Forks coach Jennifer Daman said.

“Everybody got playing time in, and the girls were really working together. I was very pleased with tonight’s play.”

Given the relatively quick nature the Spartans put away Winlock, there weren’t too many gaudy stat lines.

That being said, Paige Kennedy and Raven McCann each had five kills to lead the Spartans, while teammate Gwen Gillet had three.

Taylor Ingram dished out 14 assists as Forks moved to 3-1 in the Evergreen Division and 3-2 overall.

Forks heads to Rochester on Tuesday for the first of two league road games next week.

CLALLAM BAY — The Bruins can’t be beat these days.

Clallam Bay moved to 5-0 on the season after their second three-game sweep of the week, winning 25-15, 25-21, 25-18 on Thursday.

“The girls really played well together and moved all over the court,” Bruins coach Michelle Klepps said.

“The girls are really pulling it together. I am very proud of my team.”

Sarah Reeves had three aces, two kills and one block to lead the Bruins. Teammate Jamie Parker had three kills, while Melissa Willis added one kill and one block and Jazzmin Randall one kill and three blocks.

Clallam Bay hosts Lummis next Saturday in another nonleague tuneup prior to the NOL season.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Wolves (4-0, 5-1) remained unbeaten in Olympic League play with a 17-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-11 victory over the Redskins (2-2, 2-2) on Thursday night.

Sequim handed Port Townsend its second straight defeat in which it won the first game, then dropped the next three.

The Redskins did the same against North Mason on Tuesday.

“We took the first game from them and kept the momentum going and stayed positive, but they had just a little more opportunities for a good hit,” Port Townsend coach Nettie Witheridge said.

“Our missed serves definitely hurt us tonight. It was a battle and nobody gave up, which is all I ask of the girls.”

Christine Unrue dished out 16 assists in a losing effort for the Redskins.

Samira Pace had five digs on defense for Port Townsend, while Bella Daubenburger served up three aces to go along with five kills. Katie Pollock added 10 kills, while Jordyn Holbrook and Teslin LeMaster each had five kills.

Olympic 3, Port Angeles 0

BREMERTON — The Roughriders gave the Trojans a good battle in the first game but then trailed off in the final two.

Olympic won the Olympic League match 26-24, 25-15, 25-13.

“Olympic is a tough team,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said.

“We took ourselves out of the match, though. We just didn’t play well.”

Emily Cook had five blocks and three kills for the Riders while Kiah Jones earned 10 digs with two kills and an ace.

Chloe Johnston had seven digs and an ace while Lauren Coventon had 10 digs and an ace.

The Riders (1-2 in league, 4-2 overall) next host North Mason on Tuesday night.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders made one mistake and the Trojans made them pay for it in Thursday night’s Olympic League match.

Future University of Toledo product Andrea O’Leary took advantage of an opportune bounce in the game’s opening minute to score the lone goal.

The ball narrowly cleared a Port Angeles defender and ended up right on the feet of O’Leary, who finished from there for the game’s lone goal.

“We had a defensive breakdown, and really the rest of the game we played them evenly if not out-played them,” Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said.

“To give [Olympic] a run for their money and get them worried was nice, but I don’t like moral victories. I’d rather get the tie or the win. We were all disappointed.”

Port Angeles (1-2, 3-3) hosts North Mason on Tuesday in another Olympic League game.

Lyons’ dished out a pair of assists, one coming on a Sequim own goal off her corner kick feed, and netted two goals to make it five scores in two games for the talented freshman.

She put up a hat trick in a 4-0 victory over North Mason only two days earlier.

“Audrey McHugh was tireless in offense, and Irina Lyons relished the superb service she got from Khloe Frank, Chelsey Hoglund and many other players,” Port Townsend coach Colin Foden said.

“The team is built on a solid defense, and once again they recorded a well-deserved shutout.”
