SPORTS; Chimacum softball team makes state tourney for seventh straight time

ORTING — The Chimacum fastpitch softball team dropped the Orting Cardinals 11-3 to win the Class 1A Nisqually League postseason tournament and guarantee its seventh straight state tournament appearance.

The Cowboys (16-2) assured themselves of a berth at the 1A state tournament on May 29-30 in Pasco after rallying from an early 3-0 deficit.

Chimacum opened the game wide open with a nine-run third inning spurt and added two more runs in the fifth inning.

“After a slow start all nine starters recorded at least one hit,” Chimacum coach Bobby Cossell said.

Lacey Carter was 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and four RBIs for the Cowboys, and teammate Robyn Garing was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Garing, last year’s Nisqually League MVP, also pitched four innings of no-hit, scoreless ball in relief of winning pitcher Brittany Nelson.

Chimacum will play the winner of game between the Northwest District’s No. 1 seed and the Sea-King District No. 1 for the Tri-District championship in Sedro Wooley at 4 p.m. next Saturday.

“I’m very proud of how the girls supported each other and finished the season as league champions,” Cossell said.

“Now they are setting their sights on making a run at state one game at a time.”

Baseball: Sequim to State

BREMERTON — Sequim earned its first state tournament appearance since 1997 with a 12-5 loser-out/winner-to-state victory over Fife on Saturday.

The Wolves were aggressive on the base paths and took advantage of some poor Trojan defense to win the West Central District’s third seed to state.

“I’m just really proud of the kids and the way they battled,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefesen said.

Alex Gillis threw a complete-game four-hitter for the Wolves with eight strikeouts and six walks.

Gillis walked four as the Spartans four-run fourth inning rally tied the game at 5-5, but allowed just one baserunner and had six strikeouts the rest of the way.

“I almost took him out [in the fourth inning],” Ditlefsen said, “but he hung in there and carried us the rest of the way.”

Jason Baker was 2-for-3 with two walks, two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Wolves.

Drew Rickerson was 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs and three stolen bases, and Gillis was hit by a pitch, walked once, had two stolen bases and scored twice for Sequim.

The Wolves open up the state tournament against the District 4 No. 1 seed on Saturday in Yelm.

Sequim fell into the loser-out contest after getting shut out by Kingston 6-0 on Friday night.

University of Washington-bound Tyler Sullivan scattered four hits and struck out nine batters in his six innings on the mound against Sequim. He also went 2-for-3, with three runs, two stolen bases and an RBI at the plate to pace the Buccaneers.

Friday Harbor 18, Chimacum 10

SAMMAMISH — The Cowboys played out of character in Saturday’s 1A Tri-District championship, committing the most errors of any game all season, walking multiple batters and hitting two Friday Harbor hitters with pitches.

Chimacum starter Landon Cray allowed three unearned runs because of walks and errors in the first inning and the Wolverines pounced again in the second and third to take an early 10-0 lead before Chimacum attempted a rally.

“It was our first game on field turf and there was a little different bounce to the ball,” Chimacum coach Loren Bishop said.

“Friday Harbor did knock the ball around on us and they had to play on the same turf, so you have to give them a lot of credit.”

Quinn Eldridge led Chimacum at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs and a solo homer.

Chimacum (15-4) opens the state tournament at Castle Rock at 10 a.m. next Saturday.

“Hopefully this was a little bit of an eye-opener for the boys, ” Bishop said. “We’ll be headed home in a hurry if we make the same mistakes next weekend.”
