Spirit sets sail during Pirate Pete’s Week at Peninsula College

PORT ANGELES — Pirate Pete would be proud.

In recognition of all things buccaneer, students at Peninsula College on Wednesday showcased their drive and athleticism by running a relay race that involved Saran Wrap, cream pies, a shopping cart, little dresses and misapplied lipstick.

“It’s better than the eating contest,” said third-year student Matthew Butler of Tuesday’s event, the Collegiate Cuisine Eating Contest, just one of the events marking the school’s spirit week.

On Monday, the featured event was a performance by hypnotist James Coder in the Pirate Union Building.

Challenge taken seriously

Group members who walked away from the obstacle course of bizarre stunts not usually seen this side of Nickelodeon, Gee You Knit? (pronounced G-Unit), said they took the challenge seriously.

“We’ve been practicing for a couple of months, pumping up,” said a sarcastic Austin Kincaid, a freshman from Clallam Bay.

The event started with one team member whose legs and arms were bound by plastic wrap pushing another teammate in a shopping cart.

It ended in glory.

Brandon Heimbigner, a freshman and member of Gee You Knit?, credited his exercise regimen of soda and no exercise.

The group competed against four other teams, including members of the school’s softball, basketball and soccer teams.

Brad Groce, a freshman who competed with the soccer group, had the honor of sticking his face in a cream pie and fishing out a coin.

While wiping the pudding and whipped cream from his eyes, Groce said his crew left it all on the field.

“We dug down deep and went for the gold,” he said.
