Southwest Airlines” possible switch to Boeing Field would be years away, but seen as beneficial for Peninsula

A proposed move of Southwest Airlines from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Seattle’s Boeing Field would be more convenient for travelers using Kenmore Air Express from Port Angeles.

But any such move would take years because of the required public process and infrastructure improvements, airline and tourism officials agree.

“Obviously with the issues involving our direct access to Sea-Tac, if we can have this it’s almost like Sea-Tac moving to us,” said Russ Veenema, chairman of the Community Airline Task Force.

“It’s definitely a plus to have a large carrier at Boeing Field. Then the connection here would be terrific.”

Southwest destinations from Seattle currently include San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Houston, Miami, Chicago, New York and New England.

Southwest has a history of flying to secondary airports, so the idea of moving to Boeing Field isn’t as farfetched as it might seem, Veenema said.

“Based on what I know, it’s in the early stages of discussion. But at least those discussions are out into the public, which is a good thing.

“The more Boeing Field comes into play and the more that carriers start using it would be good.”
