Sound Community Foundation awards $5,000 grant to Port Angeles Symphony

SEQUIM — A grant from the Sound Community Foundation will help the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra continue a program that brings live music to public school students.

Sound Community Foundation last week gave $5,000 to the symphony for its Adventures in Music program.

Adventures in Music is a collaborative project of the Port Angeles Symphony Orchestra with five public school districts in Clallam County: Cape Flattery, Crescent, Quillayute, Port Angeles and Sequim.

Sound Community Foundation is a nonprofit that grants funds based upon need and circumstance where Sound Community Bank does business.

“The orchestra is grateful that Sound Community Bank will be partnering with us to enhance the lives of our children in Clallam County,” said Mark Wendeborn, symphony executive director.

“Sound Community Foundation’s contribution will enable all elementary students grades K-5 in
Clallam County the opportunity to hear quality live performing arts programs during the school year,” he said.

Supporting curriculum materials are provided to teachers for lesson plans, as well as suggestions for integrating the arts into other curriculum areas.

Students receive handouts following the performances to reinforce the concepts presented.

“The curriculum and performances used are written specifically to meet the needs of the students in our local school districts and to take advantage of local resources,” Wendeborn said.
