As the North Olympic Peninsula begins to dry out from warmer days and less rain, Clallam and Jefferson counties are looking to ban outdoor fires.
Clallam County announced its ban, to take effect on Sunday, that prohibits all but small campfires in pits or fire rings.
Clallam County’s ban will not be lifted until October at the earliest.
In Jefferson County, summer burn bans are announced based on the restrictions imposed by the state Department of Natural Resources.
But the area of Jefferson County from Port Ludlow north along the coast will fall under a burn ban starting Sunday, said East Jefferson Fire-Rescue Chief Mike Mingee.
The state bans most non-cooking fires when the fire danger reaches a moderate level.
Stronger bans are issued across Jefferson County as the fire danger increases during the summer.
Currently, the fire danger in much of Jefferson County is low and burning is allowed with a permit.
