Snow day: Schools close across North Olympic Peninsula; more snow possible today, likely this weekend

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY has been extended until 4 p.m. for the Strait of Juan de Fuca area, with the possibility of an additional 1 inch to 3 inches of snow until then.

Steady snows overnight caused the cancellation of schools across the North Olympic Peninsula today.

A list of closures, which include Peninsula College and private schools, can be found by clicking on the Web site of the PDN’s news partner, www.komotv.com . The list will be updated throughout the day and will tell you whether school will be held Friday.

The winter storm warning remained in effect for the Olympic Peninsula and most of Western Washington. Gale warnings were in effect on the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Pacific Ocean.

The National Weather Service said additional snow showers are possible in the North Olympic Peninsula’s populated lowlands today, mainly this morning. Subfreezing temperatures will continue into the weekend, but Friday should be clear with even some sunshine.

More snow — possibly more than we had this week — is forecast Saturday night through Monday morning as another storm moves in from the Gulf of Alaska. As much as a foot of new snow could fall along Hood Canal, the Weather Service said this afternoon.

Latest forecasts for your town or area on a user-friendly locator map can be found at the National Weather Service’s Seattle Web site, http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sew/ . For Real Feel forecasts and other data, click on “Weather Forecast” on the PDN’s AccuWeather site at the upper right of this page.
