Donate to victims

Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation: Make a tax-deductible donation at youcaring.org/ososlide.

Coastal Community Bank: Accepting donations at all branches (Darrington, Camano Island, Everett, Monroe, Stanwood, Sultan, Silver Lake, Smokey Point, Snohomish and Whidbey Island).

United Way: Donate online at uwsc.org.

American Red Cross: Call 1-800-REDCROSS, visit redcross.org or text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 (added to your cellphone bill).

Be wary of scams

Those wanting to donate money should exercise caution to make sure it goes to the purpose intended.

• Consider contributing at give.org, a website run by the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

• Avoid cash donations. Write checks directly to the charity, not the fundraiser.

• Never give out credit card numbers over the phone.

• Be wary of “new” charities.

• Watch out for fake “victim” or memorial social media accounts.
