PORT ANGELES — A large mudslide has blocked the Olympic Discovery Trail just below the 9/11 Memorial Waterfront Park east of City Pier.
The stairway leading from the park to the Olympic Discovery Trail has been closed indefinitely, the city said in an announcement on Friday.
Heavy rain caused the slide, said officials said. Removal of the material on the trail is dependent upon the weather, which is expected to be rainy throughout the weekend at least.
Officials said they are concerned that removing material from the base of the slide could allow more to slide down.
The location is not one which a slide has happened previously.
Mudslides during heavy rain are relatively common on the ODT, not in this area, but farther east of Port Angeles during rainstorms.
