PORT TOWNSEND — Wine drinkers, Beck’s beer fans and others who use of green-tinted glass bottles will now have a place to send the containers instead of to the landfill.
Skookum Recycling Center, 301 County Landfill Road, about a half-mile off state Highway 20, has start accepting green glass to be recycled after years of Jefferson County residents either stockpiling emerald bottles or throwing them away.
During an event at the recycling center on Friday, county officials unveiled the new recycling policy, which also includes acceptance of opaque and solid colored No. 2 plastic containers.
“It’s been a long process, something the community has wanted for a long time,” said Commissioner David Sullivan, D-Cape George.
“They want to be responsible and we want to help them.”
The incorporation of green glass to the Skookum recycling operations has been a long time coming and came about by several organizations working together.
Skookum, DM Disposal, Jefferson County Public Works, Environmental Health and the Solid Waste Advisory Board joined forces to bring about the change.
