PORT ANGELES — The city’s $64.4 million, six-year street plan includes the massive Eighth Street bridges replacement project and the controversial Port Angeles International Gateway Transportation Center planned near the city’s waterfront.
The city’s list of street and transportation projects totals $3.2 million for 2005 and $23.6 million for 2006, when the bulk of the Eighth Street bridges and Gateway center work is slated to occur.
Topping the 2005 street and transportation projects list is design of the Eighth Street bridges replacement project, which is scheduled to go to bid in late summer.
The city is replacing the two aging, trestle-like Eighth Street bridges over Valley and Tumwater creeks with two steel slant-leg spans at an estimated cost of up to $20 million.
City Public Works Director Glenn Cutler said engineers from Exeltech Consulting of Olympia will give a project presentation at June 7 public hearing.
The estimated project design cost is $1 million, with $380,000 coming from city funds.
That is virtually the only local money being used on the multimillion-dollar project with the rest coming from state and federal funding sources.
Additional $1 million
An additional $1 million also is listed for construction work on the project in 2005.
Cutler said that amount was included in case the contractor is able to do any site preparation or other work this year after the bid is awarded.
A public hearing on the 2005-11 Transportation Improvement Plan and Capital Facilities Plan is set for 7 p.m. June 7 in the council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.
