PORT ANGELES — A six-hour overnight closure of U.S. Highway 101 around Lake Crescent scheduled for this coming Tuesday has been canceled.
The closure, which was originally set from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday between Lake Crescent Road at milepost 228 and Camp David Jr. Road at milepost 221, was canceled because of a delay in the delivery of materials to the contractor, according to Olympic National Park. It has not been rescheduled.
Any future closures scheduled by the contractor will be announced in advance and posted on the Olympic National Park website along with updated project information at http://tinyurl.com/PDN-101delays, the park said.
The six-hour closure is needed to install the last pieces of the box culvert that will replace the existing Eagle Creek culverts, the park said.
The box culvert will be able to better handle large volumes of water during significant rain events and allow the passage of fish.
Construction work is underway throughout the project area at Lake Crescent. Travelers on Highway 101 around Lake Crescent should continue to expect half-hour delays Monday through Fridays during work hours.
Culvert work and paving is ongoing west of Lake Crescent Road/Barnes Point. Travelers should expect short delays for a pilot car leading vehicles through several isolated work zones. Traffic signals are in place at two locations, please use caution.
East Beach Road paving is now complete. Striping is scheduled for Friday. Remaining work on East Beach Road includes laying shoulder aggregate, grading turnouts, and installing a concrete collar and guardrail at the Piedmont Creek culvert. Drivers should expect delays during weekday work hours.
The work is part of a three-year project to rehabilitate 12 miles of Highway 101 and 4 miles of East Beach Road at Lake Crescent. The National Park Service and Federal Highway Administration project began July 10.
