Jefferson County Community Development Director Al Scalf and county commissioners are getting bombarded with e-mails from neighbors of a proposed quarry expansion at Shine Pit.
More than 40 residents sent e-mails since a July 3 meeting between Fred Hill Materials Inc. and state Department of Natural Resources personnel, Scalf told the commissioners Monday.
Many of the residents are calling for a complete environmental-impact statement to be undertaken before the 156-acre expansion is granted, saying it should be considered alongside plans to build a four-mile-long conveyer belt and 1,100-foot pier into the Hood Canal.
The Poulsbo-based gravel company wants to expand mining operations at Shine Pit, southwest of the Hood Canal Bridge, by 156 acres.
