PORT ANGELES — The Shane Park Playground Committee raised $2,000 Saturday at a bowling fundraiser at Laurel Lanes.
With help from the city of Port Angeles, the volunteer committee has now raised $107,000 of the $158,000 needed for the purchase and installation of a state-of-the-art play area at the west Port Angeles park.
The city committed $60,000 toward building the 111-foot-by-57-foot complex on the north side of the park. The playground will feature several slides, climbing areas, swings and a safety surface.
Port Angeles Parks and Streets Superintendent Corey Delikat said the committee has raised enough to purchase most of the materials.
A remaining swing set — and the more expensive labor, concrete slabs and safety tiles — will be secured as more funds are raised.
“We’re thinking about doing it in two phases,” Delikat said.
Price advantage
Since pricing is favorable right now, Delikat is making arrangements to purchase the playground equipment this month.
Janet Young, president of the Shane Park Playground Committee, said the bowling fundraiser “went very well.”
Teams of four purchased lanes sponsored by 7 Cedars Casino of Blyn for $100 per team. Laurel Lanes of Port Angeles provided a discount to the committee.
“Everyone had a really good time,” Young said.
A 50-50 raffle was held in conjunction with the bowling.
Several fundraisers
Over the past year, the Shane Park Playground Committee had held a series of fundraisers, including a Peninsula Dream Machines car show and family fun day at the park in September.
“All we need to do is fund the [playground] surface and concrete,” Young said.
“We’re pretty excited.”
Young thanked all the members of the community who have stepped up to support the playground, especially in a bad economy.
“They never said no,” she said.
Shane Park was named after Young’s son, Shane Fowler, who died in 1973 at age 9 after a construction accident while the park was being built.
