Service Fest kicks off Monday, June 4

SEQUIM — Sequim’s Service Fest begins today with a presentation by author Peter Kageyama, who spoke about community engagement with local leaders in May 2016.

Kageyama will speak at 4 p.m. at the Guy Cole Event Center in Carrie Blake Community Park.

Service Fest will run through Friday, June 15, as an effort to help community members with projects ranging from yard pickup to painting. Staff and volunteers with the city of Sequim, Habitat for Humanity, and First Federal, anticipate 24 skilled laborers traveling from across the country to help community volunteers at one of four homes in Sequim city limits.

Kageyama is the author of “Love Where You Live: Creating Emotionally Engaging Places.”

He will speak in Port Angeles at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Kageyama is a senior fellow with the Alliance for Innovation, a national network of city leaders that aims to improve the practice of local government.

On Tuesday, residents can pick up a free quart of paint from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St., to decorate their homes in Sequim’s logo colors. Painted examples of mailboxes and other items and colors available are on-hand at the Civic Center.

At 6 p.m., Joy in Mudville will perform at the James Center for the Performing Arts in Carrie Blake Community Park.

At 9 a.m. Wednesday, the city will continue its Rally in the Alley program by placing two dumpsters for free use at each of three locations — the City Shop, 169 W. Hemlock St., Carrie Blake Community Park by the Albert Haller Playfields, and Blue Sky Real Estate, 190 N. Priest Road. Dumpsters will be available until they are full, city staff said.

Volunteers will work on neighborhood revitalization projects and potentially some public projects. Sign-ups begin daily at 8 a.m. at the Guy Cole Event Center in Carrie Blake Community Park.

Service Fest will end with a closing ceremony at 5:30 p.m. June 15, at the James Center for the Performing Arts followed by a concert by Black Diamond Junction.
