Sequim’s Stuff the Bus event set today

SEQUIM — The Sequim School District supply donation drive will culminate in a Stuff the Bus event from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today.

Donors are invited to bring school supplies to a school bus parked at the Walmart Supercenter at 1110 W. Washington St., Sequim.

A school bus driver will be on hand to provide information about bus routes and school transportation. At the store’s entrance, shoppers can find a list of school supplies needed and can drop off as they leave purchased items in collection bins at the store’s main entrance.

Donations for the Sequim School District also can be made through today in bins at Sequim Community Church at 950 N. Fifth Ave.; Walmart at 1110 W. Washington St.; KSQM 91.5 FM headquarters at 577 W. Washington St., Suite C; and J.C. Penney at 651 W. Washington St.

Monetary donations can be dropped off at the Sequim unit of the Boys &Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula at 400 W. Fir St.

The Port Angeles School District held its Stuff the Bus event earlier this month, but donations can be left at the Port Angeles School District Central Services Building, 216 Fourth St., across from the Clallam County Courthouse.

The Back to School Event for Port Angeles families in need will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Jefferson Elementary School, 218 E. 12th St.

School supplies will be provided free to students in kindergarten through 12th grades. Usually about 1,000 students are served, said Tina Smith-O’Hara, district spokeswoman.

Community organizations will have booths providing information about resources. Vaccinations — for a fee — haircuts and other activities and a barbecue are planned.

In Sequim, the fifth annual Back to School Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Sequim unit of the Boys &Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula. School supplies will be made available to Sequim families in need. Resources and activities also are planned.

In Sequim, this year’s drive is organized by the Kiwanis Club of Sequim-Dungeness, in partnership with Sequim’s Back to School Fair Planning Committee.

In Port Angeles, the drive is organized by the Lutheran Community Services NW with the Port Angeles School District.

For more information or to make a donation, contact Lisa Lyon, Lutheran Community Services NW, at llyon@csnw.org or 360-452-5437; or Smith-O’Hara at 360-565-3703 or tsmithohara@port angelesschools.org.

In Sequim, specific school supply lists by grade are available on each school’s webpage, which can be accessed from www.sequim.k12.wa.us.

In Port Angeles, check www.portangeles schools.org for a list of needed supplies.

This agave grew from the size of a baseball in the 1990s to the height of Isobel Johnston’s roof in 2020. She saw it bloom in 2023.
