There’s a big — big — retail store in Sequim’s near future.
Speculation immediately surfaced that it will be a new Wal-Mart superstore, but no one’s putting a name on it yet.
Sequim Planning Director Dennis Lefevre on Monday confirmed the city has received a building permit application for a 118,000-square-foot retail store on the northeast corner of Washington Street and Priest Road.
The project would cover about 40 acres, and 118,000 square feet would make the store the largest retail building on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Its location would be on the west side of town — away from areas south and east of the downtown core which have been discussed as places for a regional shopping center.
It would require streets in the area to be upgraded to handle more traffic.
David Evans & Associates, of Tacoma, is the architect for the store, being built for Center Investments Retail Development.
Officials of the architecture firm didn’t return telephone calls Monday seeking comment on the project.
City officials have openly talked of something being in the works for the site for the past several weeks, but no one acknowledged a building permit application had actually been filed.
Lefevre said he didn’t know “officially” what retail giant will occupy the space.
