Sequim VFW centerpiece for outpouring of donations for burned-out apartment tenants

SEQUIM — Dale Fezer walked into the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4760 building early Thursday morning and heard the telephone ringing.

It never stopped.

The VFW post commander — who happened to live in one of the burned-out Grey Wolf River Apartments — said he has witnessed an outpouring of generosity from Sequim community members ever since Wednesday’s fire tore through the 13-unit apartment complex.

On Thursday, Fezer received countless phone calls from community members trying to arrange donations of items for tenants of the Grey Wolf complex, which was kept off-limits by city officials all day.

In the VFW’s main conference hall, three long rows of tables were quickly filling up with donated goods, including clean towels, clothes, shoes and other items that could be useful to tenants, most of whom were put up in local motels by the North Olympic Peninsula Red Cross chapter.

Temporary storage

The VFW, which is located directly across the street from the apartments, also allowed tenants to temporarily store their belongings — which ranged from plants to guitars and amplifiers — in the Post Home.

“We have all kinds of things available for people,” Fezer said.

“The outpouring from the community has been unreal.”

Residents who wish to donate items through the VFW can call 360-683-9546 or 360-681-0434.

The Red Cross is accepting monetary donations to help provide vouchers for food, clothing and shelter. Call 360-457-7933.
