UPDATED with playoff prospects for Sequim, Port Angeles
SEQUIM —
The Sequim Wolves took its third consecutive Olympic League championship with a come from behind 27-14 win against the visiting Port Angeles Roughriders on Friday night.
Sequim was down 7-0 at halftime. Jack Wiker, who didn’t play until the second half because of disciplinary reasons, came in at quarterback and threw for 73 yards and rushed for 68.
Sequim scored on four of its first five possessions of the second half.
More than 1,500 people watched the game at Sequim High School.
The victory was also the seventh league title (Nisqually or Olympic) in eight years for Sequim (8-1 overall, 6-1 in Olympic League play).
Sequim, the No. 1 seed, now moves into the Class 2A West Central sub-districts.
The Wolves play fourth-place Eatonville at Poulsbo’s North Kitsap Stadium at 7 p.m. this coming Saturday, Nov. 5.
The winner of that game gets the third-place team from the Southwest at home in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament.
Port Angeles, taking fourth seed from the Olympic League, has a play-in game (“pig-tail”) against Lindberg, the Seamount League’s No. 3 team, on Tuesday at Renton Stadium.
If the Roughriders win that game, they’d still have to face the SPSL champ, Franklin Pierce, four days later. That’s three games in 10 days. If Port Angeles does win two games next week, they will take the subdistrict’s top seed into state.
The Roughriders have been stricken with injuries.
Port Angeles quarterback Keenan Walker played running back on Friday because of a broken arm he suffered the previous week. He wore a short cast.
The Wolves were missing QB Frank Catelli, out with an injured groin. (Catelli has also committed to play at Air Force earlier this week.)
