SEQUIM: Six schoolteachers get layoff letters

>

SEQUIM — Layoff letters were issued Monday to several certified employees in the Sequim School District, Superintendent Mike Joyner confirmed Monday night.

Although Joyner declined to elaborate on names or a specific number, a representative of the Sequim Education Association confirmed the identities of six teachers who have been affected by pending budget cuts.

The representative, Chris Bouchey, said Erik Wiker, a high school physical education teacher and varsity girls’ basketball coach, and Jill Hay, a teacher on assignment to the special education program at Sequim Community School, were the only two full-time employees issued reduction-in-force — or RIF — notices, as the layoff letters are officially called.

Letters saying that the district would not renew their contracts for the coming school year also were delivered to Bev Horan, a middle school Title I language arts teacher, Teresa Vogtman, a kindergarten teacher at Helen Haller Elementary, Bob Cooper, a high school photography instructor, and Anne Pearson, a bilingual education instructor.

Horan and Vogtman teach half time, Pearson and Cooper are part-time instructors.
