SEQUIM — The Sequim School District has decided on a project manager to head construction projects funded by the capital projects levy that passed during a special election in February.
Superintendent Gary Neal told the school board Monday that the district selected Vanir Construction Management Inc., a construction company with offices based around the country including Portland, Ore., and Bellevue, to serve as a manager of the project that includes demolishing the unused portion of Sequim Community School.
The district’s goal is to apply for $4.3 million in state matching funds in new school construction once Sequim Community School is demolished and a construction bond is approved, Neal said.
Neal said he is “very confident [this company] will take us in the direction we need to go” in terms of doing the project right so the community is willing to help the district pass a construction bond needed to continue funding school construction.
He added there will be an overseeing manager in Gig Harbor and a project manager in Port Angeles — whose names he did not share at the meeting — but said he hopes these two individuals will help the district access local resources to contribute to the project.
Neal said he hopes the project can start this summer as a good opportunity to get construction started before the school year starts in the fall.
Board members also approved the adoption of new school meal prices that will increase for the 2017-2018 school year.
