SEQUIM – Some children cannot thrive with stone-cut schedules, clamoring classmates, long bus rides or all of the above.
And some teenagers must care for children, hold down jobs to support their families, or both.
These youngsters can, however, move around the Internet, browsing like young deer across fields of knowledge.
That’s one reason why the Sequim School District Board of Directors is eyeing Connections Academy, a provider of what’s called “virtual public education” for elementary, middle and high school students.
Baltimore-based Connections – which is at www.ConnectionsAcademy.com – has partnerships with school districts in 10 states.
Its technologists install computers in students’ homes, and teachers work with local schools to guide them through online classes – in art, science, math, foreign languages and other subjects – while offering activities such as a debate club, chess for beginners and a literary magazine.
