SEQUIM — The Olympic Discovery Trail will travel south of U.S. Highway 101 east of Sequim if residents living along Sequim Bay have their way.
Most of the 65 people attending a trail location meeting Monday night favored a route south of the highway rather than having the trail travel through the neighborhoods in which they live.
The meeting was the first of two scheduled by the Peninsula Trails Coalition to gather input on the trail location between the Sequim city limit and the Clallam-Jefferson county line.
The coalition wants to build a hiking, cycling and equestrian trail between Port Angeles and Port Townsend, eventually moving west to Forks.
The second meeting — to hear public comment on the trail location between Blyn and the county line — will be held Monday, March 25, at 7 p.m. in the Gardiner Community Center.
Results from the two meetings will be discussed by the coalition at a May 21 meeting. A location and time have yet to be set.
Many residents of Sequim Bay said Monday night that they didn’t buy water-view property with the idea of having a trail running through their front yards or past their hot tubs.
“It clashes with our vision,” Schoolhouse Point Road resident Neil Driggers said.
