SEQUIM — There was no ransom note, no real signs of struggle or clues as to how it happened.
But the abduction Friday night of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus from a Nativity scene at Sequim Bible Church was probably a prank rather than an attempt at extortion, says Administrative Pastor Tom Machamer.
“It’s just pure vandalism,” Machamer said Monday as he glanced over the scene.
It’s also a repeat performance — someone took the fiberglass figurine of Mary and another one of Jesus the previous Friday.
Mary was discovered by a church member lying in Morse Creek, but baby Jesus was never recovered.
Church members had set up the Nativity display in front of their building on North Sequim Avenue, complete with internal illumination to provide a lighted scene for drivers heading down the road.
