SEQUIM — The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center is reopening much of its exercise facilities a day earlier than expected — and has added touches of the Sequim High School’s colors.
“We’re going to open the facility Saturday, with the exception of the locker rooms and aquatic area, which includes the hot tub, sauna and steam room, and the pool,” said Executive Director Scott Deschenes.
The center at 610 N. Fifth Ave., known as SARC, is expected to partly reopen Sunday after being closed most of September for a variety of upgrades.
The aquatic area will not reopen until plumbing and electrical work is completed, Deschenes said.
The date is “too early to tell right now,” though he said he hopes that portion of the facility can open before
Sept. 29, the original date set for reopening that area.
Lines on the gym floor, which was resanded and varnished and had some boards replaced, have been painted in the Sequim High School colors of purple and gold.
Flags and lap lanes of the pool area — where the high school holds swim meets — also are purple and gold.
In addition, the racquetball courts were revarnished, shower columns in the locker rooms were fixed, and wall and ceiling tiles in the women’s locker room replaced.
SARC also is replacing pool lane markers and boards in the sauna/steam room, as well as tubing to pool pumps; fixing a pipe in the hydrotherapy pool; and changing pool wiring, chlorinators and electrical boxes.
The facility’s exterior was repainted, as were traffic lanes and arrows in the parking lot, and outdoor landscaping was spruced up, Deschenes said.
“Every square inch” of the facility, including cardio and weight machines, has been deep-cleaned, he said.
Pass-holders will be invited to a reopening celebration with hot dogs and chips from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3.
SARC is self-supporting and does not receive money from taxpayers, according to www.sarcfitness.com.
Fees for SARC are $8 for adults, $4 for those ages 8-15, $2 for children age 3-7 and free for infants to age 2. Annual and six-months passes also are available.
