SEQUIM — Property in downtown Sequim that once was slated for a retail center is now set to be sold to a residential developer, according to the developer of the former project.
Thirty acres on the east side of Sequim Avenue near U.S. Highway 101 had been slated for a development anchored by a Fred Meyer retail store.
Fred McConkey of Bellevue, who partnered with Sequim property owner Mark Burrowes on the Fred Meyer project, said Thursday that the property is under contract but that the deal is not final.
He referred all further questions to John Cannon of Tower Realty in Seattle. Cannon declined to comment.
The Fred Meyer chain pulled out of the project in November 2004 because its parent company, Kroger Inc., also owns the QFC chain and had concerns about competing with the existing Sequim grocery store.
