Sequim men hospitalized after car rolls over

SEQUIM — Two Sequim men remained in intensive care in Seattle on Monday after a wreck late on Palo Alto Road the night before.

David Elliott, 21, and Neil Strebe, 44, were airlifted on Sunday night to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where they remained in serious condition, a nursing supervisor at the hospital said.

Both men were in the intensive care unit.

Elliott and Strebe were in a 1983 Datsun sedan when the car rolled over, said Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron.

The Sheriff’s Office was unsure which of the two was driving the car, Cameron said.

One was ejected and the other was pinned under the car, Cameron said.

“Our investigators are still looking into how exactly it happened and who was driving,” Cameron said.

“A [toxicology] screen will also be part of the investigation.”

A news release from the Sheriff’s Office said excessive speed for windy Palo Alto Road as well as alcohol played into the crash.

Neither man has been charged or cited in the crash.

Cameron gave this account of the crash:

The Datsun was headed north on Palo Alto Road where the road curves to the right.

The car crossed the road, went into a ditch on the opposite side and overturned, apparently at a high speed.

Deputies Josh Ley and Karl Koehler are investigating.

Cameron said the car will be towed to a site for Ley and Koehler to more closely examine it.

A couple of miles farther up Palo Alto Road was the site of a crash on New Year’s Eve 2002, in which three were killed and three more were injured.

That, too, involved a single-car rollover, and alcohol played a part.
