SEQUIM — Calling municipal garbage collection service “a time bomb,” Mayor Walt Schubert said it’s time for the city to get out of the trash business.
Schubert, selected as mayor by other City Council members in early January, made the assertion at a Thursday meeting of the Rotary Club of Sequim.
Schubert said he believes a private company will be able to provide the same service at a lower cost to residents.
The city, according to Schubert, provides only 10 percent of the income at the landfill and doesn’t have much input in the decision-making process.
“I think somebody in that business can take care of it better,” Schubert said.
Solid waste isn’t the only service that might be better provided by a private company or other government agency.
