PORT ANGELES — A Sequim man was in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Saturday after the car he was driving was struck broadside by a sport utility vehicle in a residential intersection just east of Olympic Medical Center.
Daniel N. Wollam, 27, of Sequim was taken to the nearby hospital Thursday evening and later transported to Harborview after he was injured in a collision at the intersection of Jones and Caroline streets.
Wollam was driving a tan 1988 Honda Accord north on Jones Street when the Accord’s driver’s side was struck by a white 2000 Mitsubishi SUV heading east on Caroline Street driven by Justin K. Lee of Port Angeles, said Brian Smith, deputy Port Angeles police chief.
“Our investigation shows that [Lee] failed to yield the right of way to the other vehicle,” Smith said.
Failure to yield
The impact of the collision severely damaged the driver’s side of the Honda, with the two cars coming to rest against the curb on the north side of Caroline Street, just east of the intersection.
Smith said Lee was cited for failure to yield the right of way.
Neither drugs nor alcohol was a factor in the collision, Smith added.
The wreck happened in an “uncontrolled” intersection, meaning it has only yield signs rather than a stop sign or a traffic light, he said.
When two cars are approaching such an intersection from different directions, state law requires the driver of the car on the left to yield the right of way to the driver on the right, Smith noted.
