PORT ANGELES — A man accused of wielding a gun and exposing himself Tuesday — all while wearing a banana costume — made his first court appearance Wednesday and was released from jail on bail.
Carlton J. Kohnert, 21, of Sequim was charged on Wednesday in Clallam County District Court with reckless endangerment and carrying, displaying and drawing a weapon that is capable of producing bodily harm with the intent to intimidate.
One count of indecent exposure was dropped so that it could be refiled in Superior Court at a later date, according to court records.
Kohnert, dressed as a banana in a child’s Halloween costume, allegedly exposed himself at Wendy’s restaurant in Port Angeles before he brandished a shotgun at Four Seasons Ranch, the housing development on Morse Creek east of town, Clallam County Sheriff’s Sgt. Randy Pieper said Tuesday.
Port Angeles Police Sgt. Glen Roggenbuck said Wednesday that police are considering filing several counts of indecent exposure because of several people who saw Kohnert expose himself at Wendy’s on Tuesday.
The original charges cited a 36-year-old and a 4-year-old who had seen him exposing himself from the window of his car.
“Every single person who sees that is a separate victim,” Roggenbuck said.
“We are looking into filing more than one charge on that one.”
Anthony Maybury, 21, of Sequim also was charged Wednesday with reckless endangerment for brandishing a shotgun, said Clallam County Sheriff’s Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron.
Neither man remained in custody at the Clallam County jail Wednesday. Kohnert posted $1,500 bail and Maybury posted $250 bail.
The banana costume remains in the custody of Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
Kohnert did not explain why he was wearing a banana suit, Pieper said.
No date for the pair’s next court hearings was available in court records, but they each received citations for the charges.
An 18-year-old woman was in the car with them, but she was not arrested nor is she thought to be involved in any crimes.
Both men were arrested Tuesday after State Patrol troopers, Sequim police officers and Clallam County sheriff’s deputies followed the car, which turned onto Old Olympic Highway, Pieper said.
The car was stopped at about 6:15 p.m. and the occupants got out.
The banana-costumed man, holding a shotgun, released the weapon when told to put it down, Pieper said.
