SEQUIM — Eighteen-year-old Katie Gammill was speechless Saturday night as she was named queen of the 109th Irrigation Festival.
“I don’t know what to say,” Gammill, grinning, said after last year’s queen placed a green velvet robe around her shoulders and a sparkling crown atop her head.
“It’s such an honor,” the Sequim High School senior said a few minutes later as she left the auditorium in a deep purple gown. “I’m really excited for the upcoming year.”
Gammill will represent Sequim for the next 12 months at festivals across the state, along with Princesses Chelsea Beus, 17, Shaina Smith, 16, and Ashlee Gustason, 16, all juniors at Sequim High School.
The royalty serve as ambassadors for Sequim, especially during the annual Irrigation Festival, which runs from May 1 through 9.
