Sequim Irrigation Festival begins its Grand Finale

SEQUIM — Building on a 122-year-old tradition, the Sequim Irrigation Festival’s Grand Finale Weekend will commence today and continue through the weekend.

Consistent with this year’s theme of “122 Skies of Blue,” the Grand Finale begins with a historical walking tour of downtown, followed by the carnival and the Sequim High School operetta “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.”

Carnival wristbands are on sale now for unlimited rides at Sound Community Bank, KeyBank (Sequim/Port Angeles), Dungeness Kids Co. and the Sequim Visitor Information Center for $20 through May 11 and $25 at the event.

By Friday and Saturday, the festival will be in full swing with events ranging from a strongman contest, golf tournament, fun run, car show, logging show and tractor pull to the Grand Parade.

This year’s Grand Parade, which will begin at noon Saturday in downtown Sequim, will have 105 entries.

It will honor Grand Marshal Vern Fosket, Grand Pioneer Beverly Cays Hendrickson, Grand Pioneer Stephen Olts, Honorary Pioneer Norma Govan Knapman Topness and Honorary Pioneer Ron Parrish.

A highlight will be this year’s royalty: Queen Karla Najera, Princess Alison Cobb, Princess Abby Norman and Princess Emily Straling on their aero-inspired float.

Just before the parade, festival-goers will be able to enjoy a lineup of classic cars and motorcycles as they cruise down Washington Street.

The 29th annual Logging Show on Friday at the Blake Avenue lot will offer scheduled competitions, including chain-saw carving, ax throwing, pole falling and hand bucking, among others.

The Truck and Tractor Pull will coincide with the logging show, as well as the annual Strongman Showdown where international competitors participate in axle lift, arm-over-arm truck pull, log press, tire flip, stone stack, deadlift and car lift.
