SEQUIM — The city has approved a $12,723,131 contract with Lydig Construction of Bellevue as part of administrative closeout procedures for the Civic Center construction project at 152 W. Cedar St.
Acceptance of the contract allows city staff to work with the state departments of Labor and Industries, Revenue and Employment Security to finish contract closeout procedures.
The City Council voted to accept the construction contract as complete during its regular meeting Monday.
This means the city recognizes Lydig has completed or will complete work at the Civic Center specified in a contract drawn up in 2014.
All that remains is a final treatment for the stair treads in the lobby and the application for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver certification, which is being finalized for submission, according to the city.
The Civic Center — which includes the police station, City Hall and Community Plaza — officially opened for business in May.
On Jan. 6, 2014, the council authorized the signing of a contract to construct the new Civic Center under the Design Build model with a guaranteed maximum price of $11,845,000.
At the time, it was recognized that the council would likely approve change orders for upgrades or additions to the project for additional expense, according to city staff.
Subsequently, a total of $856,945.59 in change orders was approved.
Approximately half of that expense was the completion of the Community Plaza in the front of the building, according to the city.
Project financing
In 2012, the citizens of Sequim approved a 0.1 percent public safety tax to help pay for the police station portion of the building.
Municipal bonds worth $10.4 million were sold in 2013 for construction.
An additional $3 million in utility bonds were sold in 2014 to pay for the utility portion of the building.
