Sequim High School students hope to ‘Boo Hunger,’ set new food donation record

SEQUIM — It’s a little scary, how much Tatum Jensen wants to help the hungry.

The Sequim High School senior is spearheading a bold campaign to set a new record for food-raising with this year’s “Boo Hunger” drive.

Last year, Sequim High students collected about 6,000 pounds of food from local residents for a donation to the Sequim Food Bank.

This year, Jensen is hoping she and volunteer crews can top the single-campaign record of 12,000 pounds set by Sequim’s U.S. Postal Service staff.

To that end, students are distributing paper sacks throughout city of Sequim neighborhoods starting today. With details and instructions stapled to them, the bags will be collected Oct. 31 on Halloween night.

In 2015, Sequim High students distributed 1,000 bags. This year’s drive sees 3,500 bags, donated by Sequim’s Safeway.

Jensen and company also have established drop boxes for food donations at local banks and businesses. Those who want to contribute also can drop donations off at Sequim High, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

Jensen, who has been talking with local service clubs and businesses to promote the drive, said volunteers are accepting cash donations as well.
