Sequim High alumni throwing multi-class bash

SEQUIM — Some things never change— at least for a handful of Sequim High School alumni who are meeting for their class reunion 30 years later.

Members of the 1987 Sequim High School graduating class are celebrating their 30-year reunion with a series of events tonight through Sunday.

Not only are these alumni celebrating three decades as a graduating class, but the group is extending the invitation to the graduating classes of 1980-90.

Tony Cortani, a Sequim High School 1987 alumnus and co-organizer of the reunion this year, said students from his graduating class of 1987 and from classes around it were close with one another.

“Our class of ’87 and the classes around us were a very tight group of people that got along really well,” Cortani said.

“A lot of ’87 alumni had more interaction with other classes than their own class.”

Cortani is calling the event a “multi-class bash,” inviting people from graduating classes across 10 years to come together for three days of activities.

Tonight at 7 will be a meet-and-greet at Club 7 at 7 Cedars Casino.

On Saturday, a scavenger hunt around Sequim will begin at 11 a.m. at the corner of Lotzgesell Road and Kitchen-Dick Road. A catered dinner is planned at 5 p.m. for the class of 1987, and a 1980s-themed dance party will begin at 8 p.m. at the Guy Cole Center at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N Blake Ave.

On Sunday, a picnic and barbecue will begin at 11 a.m. at The Lavender Connection, 1141 Cays Road.

Cortani said in previous years, an estimated 60 to 80 people have attended the reunions, including spouses.

He said a lot of work goes into putting on these reunions and he hopes any donations from this event can be used to start a scholarship for a high school student and reunion fund.

“We’ve had a lot of different alumni that have been saying this is something they would go to,” Cortani said.

“For me, I really enjoy catching up with alumni in general and seeing what they’re up to; it’s always nice just catching up.”
