SEQUIM — Registration is being taken for a workshop on growing and preserving berries.

The workshop, hosted by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 4, at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road in Sequim.

The cost of the workshop is $15. Class size is limited.

Participants will be provided with publications on growing berries and resources for safe processing of the harvest.

Master Gardener veteran Jeanette Stehr-Green will share her experience on growing strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries in her home garden.

She will describe the ideal planting site for the different berries, how to plant them and how to care for them throughout the season.

She will talk about the characteristics upon which to base berry selection for your garden and identify varieties recommended for Western Washington.

Betsy Wharton, proprietor of the Clallam Canning Co., will also be on hand to give tips on how to safely preserve berries through freezing, drying, fermenting and water bath canning.

Stehr-Green has been a Master Gardener since 2003.

She received the Golden Trowel Award for lifetime contributions to Clallam County Master Gardeners in 2010 and was the 2012 Clallam County Veteran Master Gardener of the Year.

She has been growing berries on the North Olympic Peninsula for more than 15 years.

Wharton is also a Master Gardener and has spent many years perfecting the art of processing berries after the harvest.

She is a recipe columnist for the Peninsula Daily News and won a blue ribbon in the raspberry jam division of the 2004 Clallam County Fair.

To reserve a seat at the workshop, call the WSU Clallam County Extension office at 360-565-2679.
