Sequim: Father of boy, 14, accused of plotting to kill football coaches faces charges of his own

SEQUIM — The father of a 14-year-old boy accused of plotting to murder three high school football coaches has been charged with witness tampering.

Prosecutors on Friday filed two counts of felony tampering with a witness in Clallam County Superior Court against the 43-year-old man, alleging he told two of his son’s friends not to tell authorities about him spanking his son, according to court records.

The PDN is not identifying the man because it would reveal the identity of his son, who is charged as a juvenile. The PDN does not name people charged as juveniles.

The boy is charged with three counts of first-degree attempted murder for plotting against three Sequim High School football coaches. He does not attend Sequim High.

He is also charged with robbery, assault, unlawful possession of a firearm and taking a motor vehicle without permission, all felonies.

Led police chase

Authorities say he dressed in camouflage clothing and face paint on Oct. 30, took car keys from his stepmother at gunpoint and drove to the high school bus barn, where the football team had departed two hours earlier for a game in Tacoma.

He was arrested that evening after leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase on U.S. Highway 101 in three counties, crashing into three vehicles and aiming a shotgun at a state trooper on the east end of the Hood Canal bridge, according to court records.

In their investigation, Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies found two people who allegedly witnessed the boy’s father hit him in July after finding a family vehicle’s windshield damaged, according to charging documents against the father.
