SEQUIM — A representative of a rural neighborhood just outside the city limit asked the Clallam County commissioners on Monday to delay transfer of a 500-foot stretch of Priest Road to the city of Sequim near the new Wal-Mart.
Judy Larson, representing homeowners in the 125-acre Palo Verde Loop neighborhood just east of Priest Road, asked the commissioners to postpone action on the “corporate boundary” adjustment proposal that would include the part of Priest where customers will enter Wal-Mart’s parking lot.
The “superstore” is under construction.
The road segment is being widened to handle additional traffic, with sidewalks, curbs, gutters and landscaping added — and a turn lane onto Brackett Road, which borders the Palo Verde neighborhood south.
Larson said while county planners and road officials have given the neighborhood’s residents a chance to comment through the county’s comprehensive plan process, “the city has not paid much attention” to their concerns.
“More than 75 percent of the residents in the area do not want to be a part of the city’s urban growth area because the area is built out,” Larson said of the Palo Verde Loop neighborhood that includes parcels ranging in size from one to three acres.
She said owners of 58 of 75 parcels in May petitioned the county to remove Palo Verde from the city’s urban growth area.
