SEQUIM — Clallam County commissioners are rethinking the $112,000 purchase of the historic Hyer Farm from the state Department of Transportation after it placed restrictions on how the property can be used.
Hyer Farm, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, is located on Grant Road, just north of the U.S. Highway 101 bypass.
The farm has a main house, a red barn and several smaller outbuildings.
The state purchased the farm prior to construction of the bypass and put it on the market when the project was finished. During construction of the bypass, the farm was used as a staging area for road crews.
County commissioners hesitated about the purchase after discovering that the deed requires the county to keep the buildings in a condition that would allow them to remain on the historic register.
Craig Jacobs, director of parks, fair and building maintenance as well as the road department, is recommending commissioners not accept the deed as written.
