SEQUIM — City Council members took time Wednesday during their review of the proposed 2004 operating budget to debate whether Sequim’s sister city relationship with Yamasaki, Japan, should continue, and if so, how the city should fund it.
Some on the council feel the exchange partnership with Yamasaki, begun 10 years ago, offers significant cultural enhancement that benefits the citizens of Sequim.
Others, however, appreciate the program but believe it’s not directly beneficial enough to warrant spending public dollars.
Nevertheless, the council voted 5-2 to include a $6,000 line-item expense for the program in the 2004 budget, agreeing to re-evaluate in future years what their role should be.
In 2003, the council gave $2,000 to the fund.
