SEQUIM — The city will not immediately appeal a ruling handed down in early November by the state Court of Appeals which dealt with an ongoing skirmish over its ability to issue revenue bonds.
The City Council voted in executive session Wednesday against filing an appeal unless the need for bond revenues arises.
The suit was originally filed in 1996 by the city against Sequim citizens Paul and Marge Malkasian after the couple attempted to introduce a ballot initiative which would require the city to seek voter approval before issuing any utility-based revenue bonds.
The city’s attempt to block the initiative was unsuccessful, and in 1998, voters approved it by a wide margin.
But the city — concerned that the initiative’s language was too broad and overly restrictive — continued its appeal, taking it eventually to the state Court of Appeals.
