SEQUIM — The City Council on Monday night agreed to seek proposals from attorneys interested in prosecuting the city’s traffic and criminal misdemeanor cases in District Court.
City Attorney Craig Ritchie estimates that the city will save about $20,000 annually by hiring an attorney to prosecute those cases rather than turning them over to the county prosecuting attorney’s office, which had been done for the past several years.
The city isn’t going to be in the market for a full-time city attorney, however.
Ritchie, who handles only the city’s civil issues, said there probably isn’t a need for a full-time attorney now, adding that it probably isn’t a good time to make such an addition because of tight budgets.
“At some point it will be desirable to hire a full-time attorney, but probably not now,” Ritchie said.
