SEQUIM — The City Council on Monday unanimously approved annexing 76 acres near West Sequim Bay and Keeler roads.
The proposal first came in March before council members in the form of a petition-based annexation submitted by heirs of the Ida Jones estate.
The council, hoping to consolidate annexation actions, asked the Jones heirs and their representative, Larry Freedman, to solicit signatures from other property owners in the area.
They did that, then presented to city staff the endorsements of landowners composing 67 percent of the assessed valuation.
The state Supreme Court recently reinstated the petition method as constitutionally permissible, although there are other methods by which cities may annex land.
Property owners near the area to be brought into the city have expressed concerns over an impending housing development that Freedman says he would like to build there.
At issue is zoning of the land, which is currently situated in Sequim’s urban growth area and designated for low-density housing at one unit per acre.
