Sequim City Band to present free concert this afternoon

SEQUIM — The Sequim City Band will present a free concert this afternoon.

The performance will be at 3 p.m. in the Sequim High School auditorium, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

The band will perform marches, musical theater numbers and classical music under the direction of Tyler Benedict.

“Overture Jubiloso” by Frank Erickson is a rhythmic, pulsating, loud and glorious musical statement that exudes power and energy, said Grace Yelland, band member.

In contrast, “The Girl With the Flaxen Hair” by Claude Debussy is lilting and soft with a sweet, soulful English horn solo performed by Nancy Reis, Yelland said.

Musical theater numbers include medleys from “The King and I” by Rodgers and Hammerstein and “America” from Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story.”

Robert Smith composed and dedicated “Inchon” to his Korean War veteran father.

“This riveting piece begins and ends with a haunting alto flute solo played by Patsy Mattingly as a Korean girl watches her quiet countryside come under attack,” Yelland said.

The band also will perform “An American Elegy,” written by composer Frank Tichelli in memory of those who lost their lives at Columbine High School in April 1999 and to honor the survivors.

Lighter note

On a lighter note, marches such as Sousa’s “The High School Cadets March,” Kenneth Alford’s “Army of the Nile” and “Them Basses” by G.H. Huffine will stir up some happy toe-tapping, Yelland said.

The announcer for the concert will Jim Stoffer, who has been selected as 2016’s Irrigation Parade Grand Marshal.
