Sequim church sends hurricane victims undergarments from clothing drive

SEQUIM — Attendees of Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 925 N. Sequim Ave., found a specific way to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas.

On Sunday, members of the church at 925 N. Sequim Ave., hosted Undie Sunday, asking for new packs of underwear for people of all ages to send to people affected by the hurricane.

By Monday, volunteers boxed and shipped more than 1,000 items with donations from church and community members, Soroptimist International of Sequim and the Sequim Walmart Supercenter.

Andra Smith, a member of the church, said the idea grew from discussions with her sister, JJ Elizondo, who lives in Silsbee, Texas, northeast of Houston, both of which were heavily affected by the hurricane.

Smith said church members wanted to find a way to help people affected by the recent hurricanes and they learned there was a need for underwear because people “had to leave their homes with the clothes on their backs.”

Now, the Sequim church is challenging other churches in its denomination to match or exceed the donation.

They’re also hosting a reformation service Saturday, Oct. 7, with donations supporting Lutheran Disaster Relief for Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma victims.
