SEQUIM — A Sequim man was injured Tuesday when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a box truck on U.S. Highway 101 near the Clallam-Jefferson County line.
Roger A. Wagner, 57, was riding in the westbound shoulder when he was struck from behind by a 2006 Isuzu driven by Robert Duncan of Seattle, said Trooper Russ Winger, State Patrol spokesman.
The wreck occurred at milepost 274 near Knapp Road at about 11:30 a.m.
“We think (Duncan) came over onto the shoulder and struck the bicycle from the rear,” Winger said.
“There was a witness to that fact.”
Wagner was transported to Olympic Medical Center by Clallam County Fire District No. 3, Assistant Chief Dan Orr said.
Wagner’s condition at OMC was not immediately available Tuesday.
His injuries appeared to be serious but not life-threatening, Winger said.
The bicyclist did not require an airlift to another hospital, Orr said.
Duncan, 52, was arrested for investigation of driving while impaired, Winger said.
He was booked into the Clallam County jail at 4:42 p.m., according to the jail roster.
Duncan could be charged by Clallam County prosecutors with vehicular assault, depending on the investigation and the nature of Wagner’s injuries, Winger said.
The westbound lane of U.S. Highway 101 was blocked after the wreck, the state Department of Transportation said.
Single-lane alternating traffic went into effect at 12:10 p.m., DOT officials said.
The roadway was cleared at 3:23 p.m.
