SEQUIM — Auditors in Clallam and Jefferson counties will mail out about 18,000 ballots today to Sequim School District voters who are being asked to approve a two-year, $5.16 million replacement maintenance and operations levy in a special election ending May 18.
All but 217 voters in two Gardiner-area precincts of Jefferson County are registered in Clallam County.
The district ran an unsuccessful levy election in February, in which 57 percent of voters said “yes” to a $5.44 million request.
State law requires junior taxing districts such as school districts to secure a 60 percent “supermajority” to pass levies.
The Sequim School Board earlier this month approved $1.5 million in program cuts which would go into effect for the 2004-05 school year in the event of the May levy failure.
Jefferson County Elections Supervisor Karen Cartmel said her office already sent out two ballots to military personnel serving overseas.
Cartmel’s counterpart in Clallam, Patty Rosand, said about 20 ballots have gone out to both military voters and registered voters temporarily residing out of the country.
Ballots must be postmarked by May 18 in order to be considered valid.
