SEQUIM — Members of the City Council will hear from the public Monday night on a proposed shopping center project that could bring a Fred Meyer department store to an area just southeast of the city’s downtown.
Council members will take input on the proposed Bell Farm Center, a 30-acre complex that would require them to approve a zoning modification for the parcel near South Sequim Avenue and East Hammond Street.
The council will meet at 7 p.m. in the Guy Cole Convention Center at Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave.
Fred McConkey of Bellevue-based McConkey Development Co. applied in November for a two-phased project, the first phase of which would include a Fred Meyer store and gas station, as well as an unspecified number of restaurants.
The land — now owned by Sequim resident Mark Burrowes — is currently zoned for mixed use and commercial development.
Building a regional shopping facility there calls for a “C-4 overlay,” similar to that which was granted to Phoenix-based AVB Development Partners in its quest to build a complex near West Washington Street and River Road, at the west end of Sequim.
That complex is set to feature a Home Depot home improvement warehouse.
Wal-Mart has already begun building a “supercenter” just across Washington Street.
The Wal-Mart project did not require an initial public hearing before the council because the parcel on which it is being built was already zoned for large commercial retail.
