Section of East Lauridsen improvements in works

PORT ANGELES — A busy section of East Lauridsen Boulevard will be repaved this summer — and turn lanes will be added — as part of an overlay to improve traffic and pedestrian safety.

The city of Port Angeles is seeking public input as it works to complete the final design.

The Lauridsen Boulevard overlay will span a 0.6-mile section of the two-lane road from Lincoln Street to Lauridsen Court, which is just west of the Peabody Creek bridge.

It will include turn lanes at Peabody Street, pedestrian crosswalk beacons, wheelchair-accessible curb ramps and “traffic calming measures” like a lane shift and curb bump-outs, city officials said.

The city will host an open house on the Lauridsen Boulevard project Wednesday.

The informal meeting will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Raymond Carver Room at the Port Angeles library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

“Members of the public are encouraged to join city staff in discussion about the project and the various design elements and to weigh-in on which alternative should be implemented,” city officials said.

The city also is asking for public input through an online survey. The five-question survey is available at www.surveymonkey.com/r/552FYS6.

The Lauridsen Boulevard project will be partially funded with revenue from the voter-approved Transportation Benefit District.

Voters in 2017 approved a 0.2 percent sales tax increase to fund a local Transportation Benefit District, or TBD, to help pay for improvements to streets, sidewalks and alleys.

Recently, the city matched a state grant with $504,999 in TBD funding to improve West 10th Street from N to I streets in west Port Angeles.

The Lauridsen Boulevard overlay is the second major project to be funded by the sales tax that voters approved with a 67.9 percent majority in the August 2017 primary.

The city budgeted $20,000 in TBD funds for the Lauridsen Boulevard overlay in 2019.
